Lombardia has played an important part in the making of Italy. The region includes areas of remarkable diversity extending from the summits of the central Alps to the low lying fertile Plaines of the Po. Besides the bustling city of Milan, home to fashion, finance and The Last Supper, it is most popular for the beautiful lakes. Your senses are filled with breathtaking views of crystal clear water, cut with mirror images of the snow capped Alps reflected by the lakes. Lago di Como is probably the most well known. Just 50 kms long, it is surrounded by wooded hills nestled at the foot of the magnificent Alps. Beautiful small towns line the coastline. Originally fishing villages, they grew into resort towns at the turn of the 19th century. Poets, authors, and now actors have flocked to this romantic and majestic summer retreat, including Shelley, Bryon and Wordsworth in 1790 and George Clooney in the 21st century. Lago Maggiore, at 121 square meters, is the second largest lake in Italy. The east side of the lake is in Lombardia, while the west side is located in Piemonte and the north ends sits in Swiss territory. This lake is surrounded by picturesque snow capped mountains. The third lake in Lombardia is Lago di Lugano, situated between the Como and Maggiore. One half of the lake is in Italy and the other half is in Switzerland. Beautiful Lago d'Iseo is a little jewel located on the east side of the region, with the largest island of any European lake, Monte Isola. This island is less developed than the other famous lakes, with a few holiday resorts on its banks. Mostly known for sailing, it has a sanctuary for aquatic birds and has traces of ancient Bronze Age dwellings.
