The largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily has a remarkable history evolved from centuries of past rulers. Once a Greek colony, a Roman province, an Arab emirate and a Norman kingdom, they have all contributed to the island's eclectic history that you can still feel today.
Sicily is a combination of many cultures built on thirty thousand years of history that is expressed in the Classical, Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture and style.
The island is as varied as its conquerors; Lush sub tropical vegetation that hugs the coastline and scenic mountain terrain on it's interior. Sicilian cooking is also living history. Bold, robust, and colorful, each dish is a feast for all of your senses. Their cuisine represents the great melting pot of all past rulers. Honey, wine, ricotta and olives from Greece, wheat and grain from Rome, sugar cane, oranges and lemons, spices, eggplant and tuna from their Arab rulers, dried fish from the Normans, short crust pastries and béchamel sauces from the Angevins, along with sharp cheeses, biscuits and sweet marsala wine brought from a later England contribute to the brilliant and exploding flavors of every meal.
