This region received its name from the Germanic word March, meaning border, because it once lay along the edge of the Holy Roman Empire. Today it is known for its unspoiled and scenic countryside sheltered between the Apennine mountain range and the Adriatic Sea. It has become a haven for those who want to get away from it all. Italians flock here in the summer for the cool mountain air and the refreshing sea waters. They return again in the winter to ski Mount Sibillini.
