Campania (Amalfi Coast)

The earliest known inhabitants of this province can be traced back to 3,500 BC during the time of the Stone Age. The Greeks founded the capital city of Naples in 9BC and all great powers since have aspired to control it.

The vibrant and exciting capital of Naples has most identified Italy with America. Not only did the highest percentage of the immigrants that came through Ellis Island originate from this area, but typical Italian dishes have originated here, such as pizza, spaghetti with tomato sauce and most recently, the popular buffalo mozzarella. Neapolitan music is easily recognizable as Italian music and today can even be heard on a serenaded gondola ride in Venice. Mount Vesuvius, the only active volcano on the continent of Europe, is the most famous in the world and of course responsible for preserving the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneun that we visit almost 2,000 years later.
