We are so happy to have Villa Gilda back! New owners have freshened up this lovely villa for the 2009 season and it is better than ever! Furnishings have been restored, a new hot water system has been installed, the swimming pool has a facelift and WiFi internet access is now available. It's still enchantingly romantic!
Ideally located just thirty minutes north of Perugia, making it easy for you to visit Umbria, Tuscany and the un-touristy Le Marches.
This is so much more than just a place to stay. Villa Gilda offers a rich experience in elegant country living, a place to indulge the senses, and more importantly to be indulged. You know it even before you arrive to this villa, as you wind your way through patchwork fields of sunflowers and vineyards. Be prepared to submerse yourself in luxury. This villa has been tastefully restored with the finest mixture of silk, organza, Eqyptian cotton fabrics and hand washed pastel colored walls tinted in gold. Exotic silk cushion sofas, potted plants and period chandeliers are just a few of the details you find in this home that will inspire the senses. The manicured lawns are edged in lavender beds and the umbrella pines are entwined with winter jasmine and clematis for color and scent throughout the warmer months. Located just 5km from Umbertide, it allows you many day trips to hilltop villages in both Umbria and Tuscany. That is, of course, if you can tear yourself away from paradise.
ENTRANCE
The main entrance of the house, framed by a pair of topiaries in large terracotta pots, is reached up a short flight of stairs. The double doors, finished in an antique copper effect, open to the foyer and staircase leading to the first floor. An antique armoire and umbrella stand are located beneath the stairs. A pair of regency style chandeliers hangs in the foyer and upstairs landing, whose walls are tinted a beautiful shade of rose gold.
GROUND FLOOR
The ground floor bedroom, to the right of the foyer, features an antique wrought-iron king-size bed, and an antique daybed, both with luscious cream linen. Two large picture windows open to the south and west, with garden views.
A period chandelier is complemented by a pair of liberty style bedside table lamps, an Indonesian teak chest of drawers, and a wrought iron clothes rack, providing accommodation for guests' belongings.
An ornate antique gilt framed mirror hangs above the chest of drawers, and a selection of botanical prints finish the room. A 1920's antique armchair in aged burgundy leather complements the rich ochre walls and gold and raspberry accessories. Drapes are sheer drops of silk organza adding warmth and romance to the room. GROUND FLOOR - continued
To the left of the foyer is the study, where a large open fire is the focus of the room. A desk features telephone and fax facilities, and an Indonesian teak cabinet houses the television, VCRs, and a selection of classic videos.
This room leads directly to the gourmet kitchen, equipped with stainless steel fridge/freezer, oven and hob, and dishwasher. A large butchers block made from local oak in a wrought-iron frame offers ample counter space for food preparation, as well as open storage beneath for cooking essentials. In this part of the house the ceiling height is 4.6 meters, creating a wonderful sense of space, which is offset by the period chandeliers which hang low in each room.

The kitchen forms the hub of the villa. An exceptionally large picture window looks out to the garden from the preparation area, and French doors lead to the study, conservatory, a bathroom with a wonderfully spacious American-style shower, and a large living room. The main bathroom is
The salon is perhaps the most important room in Villa Gilda, extremely large at 215 square feet/ 65 square meters, with the double height ceiling creating a cathedral like ambience.
A pair of liberty style chandeliers hangs low over the sitting area and formal dining table, a unique S-shaped antique table, designed for easy conversation for the seating of up to twelve guests. The walls are a subtle shade of ochre with three huge south-facing windows open to views of pines and cypress to the valley below, and flood the room with light.
An antique grand piano sits in one corner of the room, surrounded by the spacious lounge area. Antique and collectable pieces are scattered throughout the room, as are signature gilt frames, mirrors and various works of art. An elegant French bakers rack houses a collection of books and a CD player along with a selection of CDs including classical, jazz, and blues.
Glazed cabinets house luxury items for serving tea and coffee, including a selection of butler trays and accessories for cocktails and canapés.
An extensive and colorful collection of tableware, including Venetian glassware, terracotta crockery, and silver cutlery are stored in these cabinets for your every day use.
Deep green silk velvet drapes hang to the floor, and complement the vibrant hues of the furnishings.
A wood-burning stove faces the sitting area, with large cane baskets of local hardwood and pine cones, replenished daily in the cooler months.
Off the salon, the conservatory features tall, double-glazed, wrought-iron French doors. Windows incorporated into the doors can be opened to allow cool breezes to flow through the house. With its easterly aspect, this room fills with morning sunlight, and with the doors thrown open it almost seems as if you are dining outdoors. Rich ochre walls in the kitchen and conservatory are complemented by sheer organza drapes, wrought iron work, and copper accessories. A whimsical potted citrus tree painted on the wall of the conservatory is accompanied by several real ones during cooler months. In summer the lemon, clementine and mandarin trees are relocated to the terrace and herb garden. A second bathroom with shower leads off from the conservatory.
FIRST FLOOR
Upstairs, the first floor comprises two guest bedrooms. The master bedroom is perhaps the most romantic room in the villa, French pink walls are accented by pané velvet drapes and cream bed linens. A large hand-painted wardrobe extends down one side, and an upholstered chaise sits at the end of the queen sized bed.
Across the landing is a further bedroom featuring two single beds and a daybed that can be utilized as a further bed if required. Exotic silk cushions, potted palms, and a chandelier complement warm rustic wooden furnishings and ochre walls.
All bedrooms feature finest Egyptian cotton bed linen. A third bathroom with shower is located at the top of the stairs.
AL FRESCO
Terracotta steps lead down from the conservatory to the garden and outdoor dining terrace. At the base of these steps the storage area, firewood room, and laundry are located. The laundry features a commodious washing machine, clothes dryer, and basin for hand washing.
Manicured lawns are to be found to the rear of the villa, and below the umbrella pines in front of the Living Room. Lawns are edged with lavender beds and each of the umbrella pines is entwined with winter jasmine and hybrid clematis for color and scent throughout the warmer months.
The tiled terrace is shaded by a large table top pine tree providing shade for the alfresco dining area and barbeque. Bordering the terrace is a small tropical garden with a central fountain. In the spring scented blooms grow amidst the rosemary, thyme, sage, basil and marjoram.
One corner of the large swimming pool has Roman steps, which double up as the spot for a whirlpool bath as there are hydro-massage jets which can be switched on when desired. The garden is a haven of tranquillity, sweetly scented with lavender where each can find their own spot whether it be under the sprawling branches of the conifer which shades a marble-topped table and bench seats adjacent to the barbecue and fish pond, or stretched out on one of the loungers on the pool terrace. A lawned area at the top of the garden makes a play space for children.
